Monument to Peter I officially was opened on the 5th of September 1997 for the 300th anniversary of the Russian Fleet. It was designed by the outstanding sculptor Zurab Tsereteli.
The monument of Tsereteli is the highest in Russia and the world. It is higher than the Rodina-Mat monument in Volgograd, Statue of Liberty in New York, Christ monument in Rio de Janeiro, and every other. Also, it's believed to be the heaviest one too. Sculpture with a stainless framework is plated with bronze and weighs nearly 2 thousand tons. The monument consists of three parts: the base, the ship, and the figure of Peter the Great. All the parts were made separately. To finish the sculpture, Zurab Tsereteli needed less than a year.
